Before you start Think about the sort of information you will need in order to develop your Parish Plan (or other consultation), this will largely depend on how you plan to use the information gathered. Choose methods that are appropriate to your needs. Focus the consultation on what is important so that you can make the best use of the time and resources that you have. Consider what information is already available, how could this support or inform your consultation? Neighbouring Parish Councils, Borough, District and County Councils may have relevant information as may various village organisations, groups and clubs.
Things to think about when consulting your community Questionnaires are often use to consult with communities or community groups. They allow us to gather information from a large number of people in a relatively short space of time. They provide everyone with the opportunity to ‘have their say’ and, when carefully planned, designed and analysed, can provide valuable information about your community and what it thinks. Be aware however that questionnaires gather a relatively small amount of information, although from a large number of people. They do not allow you to draw detailed conclusions about the reasons behind people’s views and opinions. The most successful consultations use questionnaires as part of their consultation process. For example, it is useful to hold some interviews, workshops or group discussions to establish some of the issues facing the community. You are then able to develop the questionnaire around these and other issues.
